The Truth is in the Dirt

This antebellum home, the Neil House, is one of the oldest houses in Tennessee, and it is absolutely incredible. It is currently being renovated, and the finished product will be breathtaking. Big time thanks to Clark Shaw at Casey Jones Village for so kindly letting us shoot there, even though the restoration won’t be complete until fall of next year. I hope you love looking at these images as much as I enjoyed shooting them!

The Time to Come

This past Saturday, I was on the other side of the camera (well sort of) with TJ and Margaret… dressed in 20s attire! Cari Phillips and Katlyn Moncada recruited us to be their models for a class project and we were happy to oblige. If someone is asking me to dress up for them in themed garb (from my favorite clothing era, no less) then I am bound to say yes.
Saturday afternoon rolled around and we drove…to the scariest house I have EVER been in. You have no idea. I will not say too much because I don’t want my mom and dad inquiring about why I was in some scary house in the first place with four other friends and umpteen cameras.
Things were going real nice and the photos were turning out quite pretty until TJ was standing in the doorway and HE HEARD FOUR FOOTSTEPS and declared it was time for us to, as my dad says, “blow this place.” We scurried like I have never scurried before in those red Mary Janes of mine. Moral of the story no. 1: DO. NOT. GO. IN. SCARY. HOUSES. FOR. THE. SAKE. OF. PHOTO. PROJECTS (even if they are for Jim Veneman). Honestly, I was hoping an image of a ghost would turn out on my film. Moral of the story no. 2: Go to S&J Grocery instead. They are very nice there.

PRESS PLAY: “Tatted Lace” by Alela Diane…

I used Vogue’s shoot, “The Society Slouch” with Caroline Trentini and Chanel Iman, as my inspiration! I almost wore my sparkly Nando Jones top. Sadly, it didn’t make the cut.
While we are on the subject of Vogue, I would like to announce that I am officially going to be an intern at Billy Reid this summer! I am ecstatic. I recently found some exceptional behind the scenes photos of Billy Reid’s Fall/Winter 2011 collection during NY Fashion Week… see those HERE.

Dreaming of Alys…

Anybody want to whisk me away to Alys Beach? I have been dreaming of it day and night. I want a vacation.
PLAY: “Summertime” by Jesca Hoop:

More of Alys can be seen HERE. How about Charleston? That is nice and warm..HERE. For more vacations in general, see HERE.

I Heart V. Richard’s!

I absolutely adore this grocery store/market/cafe…in part because they play the greatest jazz music. It is one of my favorite places in Birmingham. When I think of home I think of V. Richards. So many happy memories there mix themselves into one great ideal: cherry bon bons, spring days, Magic City Blend coffee, time with dear friends, breakfasts, and extra long conversations.

I miss Birmingham!
TUNES: “Rome” by Phoenix. I love this band so muchhhhh.

In the Streets…

Everything is sand colored. The streets are teeming with cars and buses. Male only cafes are the norm. There are men delivering tea and smoking sheesha on almost every corner.
I MISS CAIRO. Can you tell? I miss its craziness…how my head hurt after riding around in the smoggy traffic for too long…how sometimes I couldn’t sleep because it was too loud…how I saw photographs everywhere…how I didn’t understand anything anyone was saying around me besides thank you (“shokran”)…
I am sure some of those Cairo quirks are things that would totally overwhelm me after a certain amount of time, but for now, they will always remind me of an absolutely delightful couple of weeks. After leaving a place, you can dream about it, and your adoration for the location can only grow from there. At least that is how it almost always works for me.

Only one more post after this packed full of Cairo/Rollei 35s/Dispobable love!

P.S. Now you can look AND LISTEN! Hopefully the tunes well help to you get in the mood…of course each post has a mood. First try: Wide Eyes by Local Natives… TJ put it on my “Abby goes to Cairo” playlist!

Whitney and Justin were such a pleasure to work with. They are both incredibly down to earth people, so they made the day so easy and fun! I wish them many more years to come, and I hope they love these images forever!

SALLIE + PATRICK :: fayetteville, arkansas

Sallie’s dress was beautifully refined and not to mention humongous (while Sallie is tiny), and Patrick couldn’t have looked more dapper in his grey suit.
A day of bliss. Total bliss, people.

All I have to give them is a big whopping thanks! …For letting me photograph their wedding; a first for me, having entire responsibility of the day. And man oh man did I learn! While also having so much fun!! Clearly, the entire wedding party was a pleasure, and the bride and groom (my dear friends) couldn’t have treated me any better! The preparation, the ceremony, and the reception, were all gorgeous. I mean it. I want to keep blabbing, but just see for yourself!

BIG THANKS to Kate Allen for assisting me. Some of these images are hers and she did such a fabulous job!
Also, thanks to TJ Hester for putting these images together and posting them, all while I was in flight.

Most Favorite

Continental bakery is hands down my favorite bakery in Birmingham.
I can’t even tell you how much I like it. When I am away at school, I even dream about it.

There is just so much to it. It is unlike anything else in town… very french. It takes me far away and rekindles my desire to live in Europe (a desire that doesn’t even need to be provoked, really).
It is a neighborhood hub, one that refuses to give in to the commands of this technological age. Therefore, people are in constant conversation. Neighbors come and go at tables, feasting off the impeccable baked goods.
It is the best.
